The Henry Gorman Band came from the Clydeside town of Gourock in early 1979 formed from the remains of two local bands, Rivendell and Smoking Dogs, Henry and bass player Ronny Garrity had been playing together since their mid teens and together with Henry’s twin brother Willie they won the Melody Maker Battle of the Bands final in Scotland in 1978 with Rivendell, also from Gourock drummer John Grant and keyboard player Danny Gisby were gigging with an outfit called Smoking Dogs, featuring in their set a few of Henry’s songs. When both bands split in 1978 the two halves got together for a jam, and the blend was instantaneous and within twelve months emerged as one of the most accomplished and exiting young bands to hit the rock scene in the west of Scotland. Henry was the driving force around which the band was built with his soulful rock vocals, skilful song writing exceptional guitar playing you could see there was something a wee bit special about this young man. Bass player Ronny Garrity had an almost telepathic rapport with Henry, while drummer John Grant kept the energy tied with rock steady rhythm and Danny Gisby was the perfect side man on synth, Rhodes and harmony vocals. It wasn’t long before the band were headlining The Kelvingrove Rock Festival and later went on to tour with Frankie Miller, Wishbone Ash, Budgie, Girlschool and played the first Loch Lomond Festival alongside Ian Gillian, Lindesfarne, Wild Horses, Denny Laine and many others. Henry signed with Publisher Johnathan Rowlands who owned The Producers Workshop in London where the band recorded ‘The Official Bootleg’ album, a single was released called ‘Chase The Night Away’ which was championed by Tommy Vance on Radio One and Dougie Donnelly on Radio Clyde. The band toured relentlessly around Scotland eventually touring Europe and appearing on a few TV shows along the way. The Official Bootleg album became a best selling album in the States and the band decided to move to London as the industry in Scotland was nowhere to be seen in those days. But not happy with the way the industry was going in the UK Henry decided to move to New York in 1984. Not long after moving to the States Henry started writing and producing for other artists and was signed to Geffen records with his new band ‘Roo ha ha’ as well performing alongside artists such as James Brown, Midge Ure and Robert Palmer, he co-wrote and produced songs with writers Scott English ( Westlife / Barry Manilow ) Kenny Young ( The Drifters ) Lisa Greene ( Brittney Spears / Kylie Minogue ) Ray St John ( Sade ) and many more. Henry was also a member of ‘The Far Corporation’ a collection of top musicians brought together by producer Frank Farian who had worked with Barkley James Harvest, Donna Summer and Stevie Wonder, (the group were going to be called ‘The Frank Farian Corporation’ but that was too much of a mouthful) they made the charts with a version of ‘Stairway to Heaven’ a feat not even achieved by Led Zeppelin as they never released the song as a single. Henry’s last project in New York was fronting a band called ‘Big Stupid Guitars’ with the album ‘Crack’ which received rave reviews from various newspapers making it onto the album of the month column in the New York Post. Henry is now living and working as a writer and producer in London working with other artists as well as still producing his own material, he revisits his roots every once in a while catching up with Ronny Garrity and friends playing the odd gig in Glasgow and Gourock. During the Lock Down in 2020 Henry started up the very popular H Gang performances on Facebook using the wonders of technology to perform songs live with various musician friends from all over the world, The H Gang performances proved to be so popular that they carried on making them after the lock down. Thankfully The The Henry Gorman Band managed to record some of their amazing soulful rock performances from the 70s and 80s in places like The Bungalow Bar and The Dial Inn from the late 70s and early 80s which are posted for all to see on YouTube as well as other videos of Henry’s later recordings and H Gang videos, the links are on this page.
